When God Calls You Before You Feel Ready

Mar 16, 2026By FirstBCBP

There are seasons when we feel like David—faithful, consistent, and quietly doing what’s in front of us, yet unsure if anyone sees the effort. I once spoke with someone who was asked to step into a leadership role they didn’t feel prepared for. Their first instinct was to shrink back, but the person who invited them said, “I see something in you that you haven’t recognized yet.” That moment stayed with them because it echoed how God often works in our lives.

David’s anointing in 1 Samuel 16 is a powerful reminder that God’s choosing rarely aligns with human expectations. While others saw a young shepherd, God saw a king in the making. This passage teaches us that God’s vision is not limited by age, experience, or visibility. He looks at the heart, the character, and the potential He placed within us long before we ever step into it.

Understanding this story also gives us helpful context: in ancient Israel, anointing wasn’t just symbolic—it marked someone for a future assignment. The oil represented God’s presence, empowerment, and calling. But the anointing didn’t mean David would immediately become king. Instead, it marked the beginning of a journey shaped by trust, obedience, and formation. This is important because many of us assume that if God calls us, everything should happen quickly. David’s story shows us that calling and timing are two different things.

There’s also a practical lesson here. After being anointed, David didn’t abandon the field. He returned to tending sheep. He kept serving. He kept showing up. This teaches us that preparation often happens in ordinary places. You don’t have to feel ready to take the next faithful step—you just have to be willing.

If you’re sensing God nudging you forward, here are a few ways to walk with Him this week:

  •  Pay attention to what stirs your spirit. God often speaks through repeated themes or quiet promptings.
  • Stay faithful where you are. David’s consistency in the field prepared him for influence in the palace.
  • Let God define your readiness. If He calls you, He equips you—often in motion, not before.
  • Embrace the slow work of God. The anointing may come long before the assignment, but both are intentional.

As you move through this week, remember that God sees what others overlook. He sees the heart, the potential, and the purpose He planted within you. And when Heaven has something in mind for your life, nothing can stop the unfolding of what God has already begun.
