A Legacy of Faith: The Story of First Baptist Church of Bunche Park

Honoring Our Past, Living Our Purpose, Embracing Our Future

First Baptist Church of Bunche Park (FBCBP) stands as a testament to what God can do through a faithful and united people. From its humble beginnings in the early 1950s to its thriving ministry today, FBCBP has been rooted in the Word of God and committed to serving the Bunche Park community with love, grace, and unwavering faith.

Founded on Vision and Prayer

The vision for the church began when Brother William Garland and Reverend W.J. Macon recognized the need for a Baptist church in the newly forming Bunche Park neighborhood. With the help of Deacon Willie Armstrong, a storefront was secured for worship services, thanks to local developer Mr. Julius Gaines and his business manager Mr. Homer Devoe.

Not long after, the church held its first baptismal service in the Biscayne Canal, welcoming six new believers. This event also marked the beginning of the church’s music ministry, with the formation of a Junior Choir, led by Sis. Corine Stokes (Green), Sis. Willie Mae Sutton, and Sis. Mildred Jordan.

Building a Church, Building a Community

By April 1951, First Baptist Church of Bunche Park moved into its first official church building. Under the leadership of dedicated members such as Deacon Walter Sutton, Sister Evelyn Ramsey, and Deacon Edwin Ramsey, the church flourished. Ministries were formed to meet the needs of a growing congregation — including choirs, missionary groups, usher boards, and the Willing Workers.

These ministries became the heart of church life, offering worship, fellowship, service opportunities, and spiritual growth for all ages.

A Foundation of Faithfulness

In a significant milestone of growth, the church broke ground for a new building on June 10, 1986. The new sanctuary was completed in under a year, and a Dedication Week was held to celebrate what God had done. The building was paid off in just five years, a reflection of both God’s provision and the dedication of His people. A Cornerstone Laying Ceremony further commemorated this moment in the church’s journey.

A Church with a Purpose

Today, First Baptist Church of Bunche Park continues to be a place where:

The gospel of Jesus Christ is preached with conviction and compassion
Worship is vibrant and spirit-filled
Families are nurtured and generations are connected
Service to the community is central to our mission
Discipleship, fellowship, and prayer remain at the core of our identity
Our church exists to glorify God, uplift His people, and be a light in the world.

Looking Ahead with Hope

FBCBP remains grounded in its original mission while embracing new opportunities to grow and serve. With hearts full of gratitude and eyes fixed on Christ, we press forward — knowing that the same God who guided our past will faithfully lead our future.

There is a place for you here. Whether you’re seeking spiritual growth, meaningful community, or a fresh start in your faith journey, we welcome you to worship, grow, and serve with us at First Baptist Church of Bunche Park.
