Discovering the Names of God: A Journey into His Heart and Character

May 07, 2025By FirstBCBP

As believers, one of the most powerful ways to deepen our relationship with God is by understanding His names. Each name reveals a different aspect of His character, His promises, and His deep love for us. In the Bible, God doesn’t just tell us who He is—He shows us through the names He is called. Learning these names can transform how we pray, worship, and trust Him in every season of life.

Let’s explore some of the most significant names of God and what they mean for us today:

1. Elohim – The Creator God
Genesis 1:1 – "In the beginning, God (Elohim) created the heavens and the earth."
Elohim is the first name used for God in the Bible. It speaks to His majestic power and creativity. He is the divine Creator who brings order from chaos, light from darkness.

2. Yahweh (Jehovah) – The Self-Existent One
Exodus 3:14 – "God said to Moses, 'I AM WHO I AM.'"
This personal name reveals God as eternal and unchanging. Yahweh is close, intimate, and ever-present in our lives.

3. El Shaddai – God Almighty
Genesis 17:1 – "I am God Almighty; walk before me faithfully and be blameless."
He is our all-sufficient God—powerful yet nurturing, strong yet gentle.

4. Jehovah Jireh – The Lord Will Provide
Genesis 22:14 – "So Abraham called that place The Lord Will Provide."
This name assures us that God sees our needs and provides faithfully, just as He did for Abraham.

5. Jehovah Rapha – The Lord Who Heals
Exodus 15:26 – "I am the Lord who heals you."
God’s healing reaches every part of our being—body, soul, and spirit.

6. Jehovah Nissi – The Lord Is My Banner
Exodus 17:15 – "Moses built an altar and called it The Lord is my Banner."
He is our victory in battle and our covering in every challenge.

7. Jehovah Shalom – The Lord Is Peace
Judges 6:24 – "So Gideon built an altar to the Lord there and called it The Lord is Peace."
In God’s presence, we find calm in the storm and hope in the unknown.

8. Jehovah Raah – The Lord My Shepherd
Psalm 23:1 – "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want."
God lovingly guides and cares for us like a shepherd for his sheep.

9. El Elyon – God Most High
Psalm 57:2 – "I cry out to God Most High, to God who fulfills His purpose for me."
He is exalted above all, sovereign over every detail of our lives.

10. Jehovah Shammah – The Lord Is There

This name reminds us of God’s constant presence. We are never alone.
