When Jesus Makes It Personal

Some questions stay with you long after they’re asked. I once spoke with someone who was wrestling with their faith—not because they didn’t believe, but because they realized their understanding of Jesus was shaped mostly by what others had said. They told me, “I need to know Him for myself.” Their words echoed the question Jesus asked His disciples in Matthew 16:15: “But what about you? Who do you say I am?”

This moment in Scripture is deeply personal. Jesus begins by asking what people say about Him, but He doesn’t stay there. He turns the question toward His disciples, inviting them into a revelation that cannot be borrowed. Peter’s answer—“You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God”—wasn’t learned from public opinion. It was revealed by the Father. This teaches us that true faith is discovered, not inherited. It grows as God opens our eyes to who Jesus truly is.

When Jesus becomes personal, everything changes. He becomes more than a name we’ve heard or a story we’ve been told. He becomes our peace in uncertainty, our strength in weakness, our anchor in shifting seasons. And as that revelation deepens, God builds our lives on a foundation that cannot be shaken. Jesus told Peter, “On this rock I will build my church,” reminding us that God builds on revealed truth—not secondhand belief.

So how do we lean into this personal revelation?

1. Ask God to show you who Jesus is. He delights in revealing Himself to those who seek Him.

2. Spend time in Scripture with an open heart. Revelation often comes through quiet moments of reading and reflection.

3. Notice how God shows up in your daily life. Sometimes the clearest answers come through lived experience.

As you move through this week, let Jesus’ question rest gently in your spirit. Not as pressure, but as invitation. He wants to be known by you—not just understood, not just admired, but known. And when you discover who He is for yourself, you’ll also discover who you are in Him.
